Happy Birthday Silky Boy
Written by Sybil Vaughn for Joey’s sixth birthday, June 8, 2006

Handsome Joey, shy Silky boy, I’ve only had you for a few days.
You had to learn new schedules and how to function in new ways,
I wonder what you think when you awaken each day to new faces
You don’t quite know what to do without your recognizable places.

You Iowa mom Sherry packed for you a bag of possessions familiar
To help ease the transition to a new life that is not quite as similar.
Instead of big furkids and one Silky sister you now have just a female
Sibling the same age as you; she’s not accustomed to life with a male.

I had your Silky mom before you; she went to the Bridge not long ago.
Since then both Misty and I have been consumed with sorrow and woe.
You hadn’t seen her since you were a pup; she was so precious and sweet
In getting you I felt that I had a small part of Anna back under my feet.

As each day goes by, you begin to loosen up more and dare to venture,
To explore the surroundings that may cause you to feel afraid of censure.
I finally heard your high-pictched bark that sounds just like your mom.
The hidden terrier appears as you represent the ancestry you came from.

You fly around the fenced back yard, little feet hardly touch the ground.
You love to feel the wind against your face as you run excitedly round.
You discover the neighbors and their furkids as every inch you explore
New sights, sounds, and wonderful smells, you think “show me more!”

For a while at nighttime your tired head lay on your familiar little bed
Until you learned that canines could sleep with their humans instead.
You love to snuggle against your human mommy, what a sweet boy,
Except when you keep us awake, trying to play and shaking a toy.

I am so glad to have you here; happy sixth birthday little Silky boy,
I think we have many more happy days ahead; you are such a joy.
When you lay claim to this place as your own, you will feel secure,
Yet I don’t think you will lose that look that’s says Joey is demure.
This is my new
toy.  It says Lil
Buddy because
that's what my
mommy calls me.
Aren't I a
handsome
dude?
Mommy got
me and Misty
a summer
haircut.
