There are many arts and crafts establishments in the Smoky Mountains. It is fasciniating to watch the craftspeople make many things from candy to baskets to pottery and other wares. One place we visited in 2007 was an area we've never been before. It's the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community on Glades Road in Gatlinburg. People in that area who had a particular skill originally started selling their specialties from their homes and some still do, but others have built stores along the mountain road.

Driving down Glades Road, you see some majestic mountain scenery.

Two groups of arts and crafts stores. In the Morning Mist Village I bought a lovely necklace and earring set that was made of fine silk needlepoint with over 1600 stitches per inch. The needlepoint rose was encased in a gold setting.

The place below had to be my favorite. I was totally engrossed in watching them make the pottery and decorate it. The owner and his family were endearing and the unique pieces of pottery were just gorgeous.
The pottery store even had a mountain band playing outside for entertainment.

Do check out their website. Although the website does not show anywhere near all their inventory, you can get a flavor of what it's like and you can also order if you see something you like. Do watch the three videos. There is a video link on the homepage, also a video page listed in the navigation bar that contains two videos. The address is below: www.alewinepottery.net |
