Autumn 2010
Raleigh continued to have extreme heat and drought conditions
in September and well into October.
It's really difficult to make the yard look nice, but I still have to try.
September
It's been a very long time since I've
been around crepe myrtle trees but
they keep growing and blooming.

The Crepe (or Crape) Myrtle
(Lagerstroemia indica) is one of the
most planted decorative trees in the
United States. It originated in China but
is now cultivated widely throughout the
world.

There are many variations in size, from
small shrubs to tall trees. Flowers can
range from white to pink, magenta and
purple.

Most Crepe Myrtles are shrubs by habit
and beautiful in that form. Still, many
Crepe Myrtles are pruned to grow as
small trees. In this form, they decorate
parking strips and parking lot planters
everywhere.
Their long bloom season is one reason for their attraction. In some climates they will bloom for
almost six months. They also have interesting bark that tends to peel off in small sections. Once
the flowers die back, the seed will grow readily the next year.

About the only real enemies they have are aphids and humidity. Crepe Myrtles make a beautiful,
low maintenance addition for any garden.

The day lilies have quit
blooming but the Russian
Sage is flourishing.

The salvia is doing well
too, but I keep having
to cut it back.
Perovskia or Russian Sage is a woody sub-shrub with long panicles of lavender-blue flowers
that become increasingly brilliant as they open.

Perovskia grows as a many stemmed clump with flower panicles at the ends of each stem.
The foliage is finely cut gray-green leaves that are slightly scented. When fully in bloom it
looks like a purple haze.

Beautiful October mums.
October
The marigolds held up well in spite
of the heat and dry conditions.
Now they have perked up and are
doing well; so are the mums.
Early November.
Mid - November
Can't believe we've been here for two years.

Realtor John gave us some potted mums for a two year anniversary gift.
They look nice in the yard with the other flowers.
It's a great time of the year here, warm days, cool
nights, beautiful colors, and a little rain.
