Ever since I had life’s sweet pleasure of knowing you, always about this time of the year My thoughts turn to your birthday, and its merry celebration, a time of joy and of cheer. Do you remember the birthday cakes I bought from Barkin Bakery just for you to savor? Made of turkey and vegetables with cream cheese icing; you seemed to relish the flavour. On your last birthday here on this earth, you had a checkup with the animal eye specialist. She was so nice and took care of your eyes so you saw clearly, not through blinded mist. After your last appointment, we stopped at Petsmart and went browsing through the store; I let you sniff, look, and ponder which toys and treats, even a bright sweater, gifts galore. I took the day off work to make sure your eleventh birthday was a day you would adore. We went for a walkies to the park, I will remember your delight in all things evermore. You tired easily then I carried you; still you enjoyed the sights so the outing was a treat. I made your favorite food for dinner that night since more than anything you loved to eat. You hadn’t felt well and required many doctor visits and meds, and kept needing more. I had to give you insulin shots and test your urine; you hated the diabetes treatment gore. Yet you always kept that sweet, trusting disposition, a trait we could all greatly admire, But for your trust and all the doctors, I couldn’t keep you well, though it was my desire. Little did I know that day was your final birthday and I’ve wondered many times since, What could I have done differently to make your life better, to ease your suffering, hence What I wouldn’t give to hold you once more, to get one more chance to earn your trust, To show you my love and let you benefit from my learning; your death seems so unjust. But I know that you can suffer no more, no shots, no tiring, nothing that makes you sad. As a Rainbow Bridge angel, you run across green fields and clear streams, feeling glad. Though other Silkies live with me now, no one can take your place, you’re my first love. You were the one who taught me what a delight these little critters are, a gift from above. |
